The famous Montparnasse tower

Just next to the underground station Montparnasse-Bienvenue, and from the SNCF train station is the Montparnasse tower, built in 1973.

Montparnasse Tower

The tower measures 200m high and has 59 floors. It will take you 38 seconds to reach the top and its panoramic terrace from where you will be able to admire a superb view of Paris and its surroundings.

Montparnasse tower

In 1934, the SNCF noticed that the old Montparnasse station didn’t respond anymore to its needs. It then began a huge town planning to reorganize completely the district. Given the size of the project, it needed a leading element to stand up to the ambitions.

It was in 1958 that the restructuring of the neighborhood begins with, as a first measure, the relocation of the old train station.

In the same place of the old station, it was constructed the most modern monument of the capital: the Tour Maine-Montparnasse (its official name).

A building made of glass and steel.

Works began end of 1969 and were finished in 1972. Its creators, the architects had to face three types of constraints: the presence of the underground under the tower, the nature of the basement and those inherent to constructions of such heights.

The Maine-Montparnasse tower lies over 56 pillars that go down 62 meters into the ground. At the moment of its creation the glass and steel building is the biggest building of Europe.
